A Brief History of Curry

Curry has become an integral part of British culture and no more so than curry in Bradford life and especially here at Omar Khan's Bradford and Skipton. Our cities favourite dish has a long and interesting history, for example did you know that we have the Portuguese to thank for introducing chillies to the Indian subcontinent in the early 14th century? The British acquisition of Bombay and Calcutta spread the local cuisine leading to the spice trade becoming a world wide industry between 1661 and 1690.
During the 19th and early 20th centuries, curry grew increasingly popular in Britain due to the sizable number of British civil servants and soldiers associated with the British Raj. Following World War II, curry became even more popular in Britain due a rise in immigrants from South Asia. The Shafi in Gerrard Street, London the first successful Indian restaurant in the UK opened in 1915 and today curry and Asian cuisine are an irreplaceable part of British life transcending race and culture, no more so than among our Bradford Indian restaurants. So why not make your own little piece of culinary history and settle for no less than the Best Indian Restaurant in town the renowned Omar Khan’s Bradford and Skipton?
